Frequently Asked Shariah & Financial Questions
Why is my Islamic (Hijri) age older than my Gregorian (Solar) age? +
The Gregorian solar year has 365.24 days, whereas the Islamic Hijri lunar year has 354.37 days (about 11 days shorter). Because of this 11-day annual difference, for every 33 solar years you live, you complete approximately 34 Islamic lunar years.
Why does Islamic Fiqh use the Hijri Lunar age for Zakat and Bulugh? +
All Shariah obligations—including the completion of one Zakat year (Hawl of 354 days), fasting, and the age of maturity (Bulugh)—are governed strictly by the Hijri lunar calendar (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36). Paying Zakat according to the 365-day solar calendar delays Zakat by 11 days every year.
